Group Process Guidelines

Bud Feder was a Master Gestalt Group innovator and trainer who passed away in 2019 leaving a legacy of many of us who cherish his genius, insights and loving presence in the Gestalt Community.

Our group guidelines for process group experience throughout the training are drawn from his work.

Here-And-Now Interactive groups are exciting, challenging and powerful vehicles for personal growth.  We learn from interactions with group members about our personal style, including ways of interrupting and distorting contact.  These groups provide an immediate opportunity to experiment and to risk new ways of being with others.  They provide  a sense of closeness and belonging, an opportunity to connect and to grow.  An assumption of this in training process is that you will learn to transfer from the group to the rest of your life.

Process groups are not designed for work on specific therapeutic problems, but instead focus almost exclusively on what is happening now in this situation.

We will initially work with trainers as the group leader, and will eventually shift to the group members taking turns as leaders of process.

Group Process Expectations:
  • the leader will draw the groups attention to feelings within the group and toward other members, individually and in subgroups
  • awareness of opportunities for and fear of innovative behavior
  • opportunities for and expectation of each member participating emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally, although each member is free to work at her own pace
  • various techniques and methods, such as rounds, experiments and risks, which will become clearer as we work - again at your own pace

Recommendations for getting the most out of group training:
  • focus on what is happening now, in this group
  • become aware of counterproductive fixed and reflexive stuck patterns
  • seek and take opportunities to try out innovative behavior
  • take a moment to get centered before group
  • be consistently in attendance
  • journal after sessions
